Salsa is a staple in our house because it is probably one of my husband’s favorite things to eat. Each time he eats it you would think it was his last day on earth because we go through so much of it. Every Saturday my husband and I go to the farmers market and each week my husband talks about wanting really good, fresh tomatoes. Well up until this past week they haven’t really been in season. I was told that first of July in Tennessee was probably the time to start looking. So this past week we looked around and found some beautiful looking ones. They were actually extremely large. In this recipe I used almost 2 lbs and it was only two tomatoes. Few things compare to making homemade salsa with very fresh ingredients so was pretty excited when I was able to get most of the ingredients there.
The beauty of making your own salsa is that you can design it exactly to your taste and liking. Sweet, spicy, chunky, or smooth etc. I prefer to make mine more like pico de gallo so you can really taste the tomato and other ingredients. However, if you prefer yours to be smoother you can take half of the ingredients and put it through a food processor or even put all of it in and puree.
So while salsa ingredients are in season go grab some fresh produce and make a batch of your own!
Enjoy!
Homemade Salsa
- Prep Time: 15
- Total Time: 15
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs tomatoes (2 large or 4 small)
- 2 medium sized jalapenos – deseeded
- 1 cup diced white onion
- ½ cup chopped packed cilantro
- 2 minced garlic cloves
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly.
- Adjust salt, pepper and lime according to taste.
- Serve right away or let it sit in the refrigerator for a few hours. More flavors come out the longer it sits.
Notes
- Depending on the size of your lime you may need more than one.
- You may need more than 1/2 tsp of salt if you have fine sea salt instead of coarse.

This looks fantastic. Where can I order some?

I can no longer remember the source, but once I read a blog post that said the secret to authentic salsa is a pinch of cinnamon. Just a pinch, learned that the hard way!

P.S. I like that you don’t use any canned tomatoes!
